Background of the study
Traditional guilds in Onitsha North have historically played a pivotal role in the economic development of the region, serving as centers of skill transmission, mutual support, and commercial networking (Nnaji, 2023). These institutions, deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Anambra State, have evolved from medieval craft associations into modern economic actors that influence contemporary trade and industry (Okeke, 2024). Guilds not only preserve artisanal skills and indigenous knowledge but also foster a sense of collective identity and social solidarity among members (Chima, 2023). Their contributions to economic development can be seen in the promotion of local entrepreneurship, the provision of vocational training, and the facilitation of market linkages which are critical for sustainable growth (Ude, 2024). In recent years, scholars have argued that the integration of traditional guild systems with formal economic institutions could stimulate further economic innovation and competitiveness (Ezenwa, 2023). However, challenges such as bureaucratic inertia, limited financial support, and competition from modern business conglomerates pose significant obstacles to the continued relevance of these guilds (Anyanwu, 2024). This study seeks to examine the multifaceted contributions of traditional guilds in Onitsha North, highlighting their role in driving local economic development while navigating modern challenges (Ibeh, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite their historical importance, traditional guilds in Onitsha North face challenges in adapting to the rapidly changing economic landscape. The diminishing influence of these organizations due to competition from modern enterprises and regulatory constraints has raised concerns about their capacity to contribute to local economic development (Eke, 2023). Additionally, internal issues such as leadership conflicts and inadequate financial resources further impede their effectiveness. These challenges limit the guilds’ ability to provide meaningful support to local artisans and entrepreneurs. Consequently, the gap between traditional economic practices and contemporary market demands widens, necessitating a critical examination of the guilds’ current role and potential strategies for revitalization (Nwogu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  • To examine the contributions of traditional guilds to the economic development of Onitsha North.

  • To identify challenges limiting the effectiveness of these guilds.

  • To propose strategies for integrating traditional guilds with modern economic practices.

Research questions:

  • What are the key contributions of traditional guilds to local economic development?

  • What challenges hinder the operational effectiveness of these guilds?

  • How can traditional guilds be revitalized to meet modern economic demands?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Traditional guilds significantly contribute to the economic development of Onitsha North.

  • H2: Internal conflicts and limited resources negatively impact guild performance.

  • H3: Strategic integration with formal economic institutions enhances guild efficacy.

Significance of the study
The study is significant as it underscores the importance of traditional guilds as drivers of local economic growth. By evaluating their contributions and challenges, the research offers actionable insights for policymakers, guild leaders, and development practitioners. The findings can inform initiatives to preserve indigenous economic systems while adapting them to modern market conditions. This research ultimately contributes to sustainable economic development in Onitsha North by highlighting the potential of traditional institutions in a contemporary economic framework (Uzo, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses exclusively on the contributions and challenges of traditional guilds in economic development within Onitsha North Local Government Area, examining only the local socio-economic context.

Definitions of terms:

  • Traditional Guilds: Community-based organizations that transmit artisanal skills and foster economic cooperation.

  • Economic Development: The process of improving economic well-being and quality of life.

  • Onitsha North Local Government Area: An administrative division in Anambra State with a rich history of guild activity.
